Publisher's description: Friendship of Nations expands on Slavs and Tatars' work into the unlikely shared genealogy between Iran and Poland -- from the 17th century to the contemporary Green movement. Drawing on archival research and recordings from 1979 through the 1980s, as well as lectures, screenings and art work, this book traces a lost history of the two nations' historical connections: WWII Polish refugees in Iran; dissident "samizdat" publications; the importance of craft-based cultural resistance; and present-day political analogies during Solidarnosc. In venues as varied as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Polish Tatar villages on the Bieolrussian border, art collective Slavs and Tatars has, since 2006, used the improbable pairing of humor and geography to shed light on the complex socio-politics of the Eurasian region.
