MODERNISM AT THE FRINGES: HERBERT MAYER AND THE WORLD HOUSE GALLERIES. Picker Art Gallery, Colgate University, Hamilton, 2011. 84 pp. with 39 ills. (34 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 2012-943307 ISBN 9780972935258 In English.
Accompanying an exhibition of some 40 paintings, drawings, collages and other works by a diverse group of mostly lesser-known international artists active in the 1950s and 60s -- a show drawn from a large collection of works donated to Colgate University in 1966 by gallery owner Herbert Mayer that became the core of the Picker Art Gallery's collection -- this catalogue chronicles the development of Colgate's Dana Creative Arts Center while also reviewing the history and significance of Mayer's World House Galleries on Madison Avenue in New York, which presented shows by such important figures as Dubuffet, Ensor, Ernst, Giacometti, Klee, Manzu and Morandi, and offers a useful appendix documenting the exhibitions mounted by the gallery from 1957 through 1966.
