Exploring the significance of a lecture delivered in 1905 by German art historian Aby Warburg (1866-1929) in which he introduced his now famous "pathos formula" concept, this publication is a revised and expanded edition of Die entfesselte Antike: Aby Warburg und die Geburt der Pathosformel in Hamburg (Hamburger Kunsthalle, 2011) and documents a related exhibition that reunited some 40 prints and drawings by such figures as Durer, Mantegna and Pollaiuolo that scholars have recently learned were borrowed from the Kunsthalle Hamburg by Warburg to serve as visual aids for his lecture.
