Accompanying an exhibition that sought to challenge the view that 19th-century Irish artists focused mainly on landscapes and images of the elite while ignoring depictions of the rural poor, this catalogue features some 60 chiefly 19th-century genre paintings depicting interiors and indoor activities, complemented by several 20th-century paintings of similar subjects and a small selection of artifacts documenting Irish material culture of the period, including vernacular furniture, pottery shards and utilitarian objects.
