Published to mark the opening of the Barnes Foundation's new facility in Philadelphia and providing the first general overview of the museum's wide-ranging holdings, this catalogue features selected works organized into groupings that correspond to the unconventional arrangement of the collection as formerly displayed in the Merion, Pennsylvania, home of American physician, businessman and art collector Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951), the 21 installation "samplings" introduced by photographs documenting the original wall displays, which featured Post-Impressionist and early Modernist paintings by such figures as Cezanne, Courbet, Gauguin, Matisse, Renoir, Rousseau, Seurat, Soutine and Van Gogh exhibited alongside paintings by various Old Masters, African sculpture, Asian art, Native American ceramics, European and American decorative and industrial arts, and other diverse art works and artifacts.
