PERFECTLY AMERICAN: THE ART-UNION & ITS ARTISTS. Amanda Lett et al. Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, 2011. Distributed by University of Oklahoma Press, Norman. 128 pp. with 78 ills. (74 col.). 23 x 28 cm. ISBN 9780981979922 In English.
Published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name, but not specifically documenting the show, this book examines the fascinating history of the American Art-Union, a subscription program operating from the 1840s through 1852 that served to educate a largely middle-class audience about art by providing each subscriber with one or two fine-art engravings each year (as well as a chance to win any of numerous original paintings offered through an annual lottery), the works often depicting scenes of everyday life, historical tableaux or images that particularly appealed to national sentiments.
