Examining the life and historical significance of Marie-Therese Geoffrin (1699-1777), who for nearly forty years was a leading figure of the French Enlightenment and one of the most influential of all Parisian salonnieres, famous for her weekly dinners that brought together leading artists, writers and intellectuals, this catalogue was published on the occasion of an exhibition that assembled nearly 400 works associated with her life, patronage, collections and business connections (as a shareholder of the Royal Manufactory of Mirror Glass), among them paintings, prints and drawings by such figures as Boucher, Nattier and Vernet, decorative art objects that included an elaborate porcelaine service given to her by Empress Maria Theresa of Vienna, and various letters and other archival materials.
