CHARLES SIMONDS. Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris, 1994. Organized in association with Fundacio "la Caixa," Barcelona. Published in association with Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 122 pp. with 89 ills. (51 col.). 30 x 24 cm. LC 96-128046 ISBN 2908901315 Bilingual in French and English (complete entries in French only).
A well-illustrated survey of Simonds's individualistic oeuvre, this catalogue documents an exhibition of 40 sculptures and installations produced by the American artist (b. 1945) from 1970 to 1994, many of the works consisting of elaborate complexes of tiny clay dwellings and towers representing settlements created and abandoned by an imaginary civilization of miniature people. Two texts discussing the social, psychological and aesthetic concerns underlying Simonds's exploration of architectural forms supplement an extensive chronology of the artist's career that incorporates illustrations of works created in situ on the streets of New York and Paris and numerous excerpts from critical commentaries. ***PARIS EDITION IS NOW OUT OF PRINT.
