Marking the centenary of 1897 unveiling in Boston of Augustus Saint-Gaudens's celebrated bronze Civil War monument honoring Union commander Robert Gould Shaw (1837-1863) and his regiment of black volunteers, this volume presents preparatory sketches and plaster studies of the Shaw Memorial (a high-relief depiction of the mounted officer surrounded by marching soldiers), numerous historical photographs of the finished work and four substantial essays tracing the history of the Massachusetts 54th regiment, detailing the creation of the monument and assessing its significance within Saint-Gaudens's oeuvre and describing the recent restoration and recasting of a plaster version of the work produced by the renowned American sculptor (1848-1907) in 1900. A revised and expanded edition of this book was published in 2002 (see Worldwide 63839).
