Showcasing environmentally oriented works by an American artist whose singular oeuvre explores the visual representation of nature and the history of the natural sciences, this catalogue features pictorial documentation of eleven installations and other works produced by Dion (b. 1961) from 1988 to 1994, an extensive "lexicon" of natural history terms and nine concise critical essays examining the formal, conceptual and ecological concerns embodied in the exhibited pieces, which range from elaborate sculptural tableaux incorporating scientific specimens, books and other diverse objects to evoke the laboratories or studies of 19th-century naturalists to a series of photographs of polar bears as they are displayed in natural history museums around the world.
