Assessing the career and influence of prominent Italian art critic Sarfatti (1880-1961), a long-term mistress of Mussolini who became the chief theorist of the Novecento movement of the 1920s, this catalogue presents six essays, an anthology of Sarfatti's writings, and a detailed biographical chronology along with good reproductions and scholarly discussions of 81 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints produced chiefly during the first three decades of the 20th century by Umberto Boccioni, Piero Marussig, Medardo Rosso, Gaetano Previati, Achille Funi, Oskar Kokoschka, Mario Sironi and 15 other artists with whom the critic was associated, many of the landscapes, portraits, figure studies and abstractions reflecting the synthesis of modernist and classical styles promoted by the Italian government during the early years of the Fascist regime.
