Tracing the history of the Dobree family in Nantes and selectively surveying works from the museum founded by Thomas Dobree II to house his extensive collections, this catalogue documents an eclectic array of more than 600 objects dating from antiquity to the 19th century that encompasses prints and paintings by such figures as Schongauer, Durer, Rembrandt, Callot, Ostade and Jongkind; ceramics, furnishings and other decorative objects; illuminated manuscripts and early printed books; coins and medals; and architectural drawings by Viollet-le-Duc, whom Dobree commissioned to design the chateau in which the collection is displayed.
