Showcases newly commissioned installations and performance-based works by six American artists and collaborative teams (among them Karen Finley and Mel Chin) who were invited to initiate socially engaged, community-oriented projects involving the participation of diverse segments of the public, presenting three substantial essays along with photographic documentation and descriptions of the exhibited pieces, which range from an open-frame "shotgun" house containing plans and written proposals to convert similar houses in the Watts section of Los Angeles into a community arts center to the staging of life-drawing classes in a simulated studio environment in which museum visitors could draw from a nude model.
