Examines the international influence of a well-known French critic whose 1952 book Un Art autre popularized the Art Informel movement as a European counterpart of American Abstract Expressionism, presenting a 1973 interview with Michel Tapie (1909-1987) and three essays discussing his links with avant-garde circles in Turin, Paris, New York and Osaka along with excellent reproductions of 114 paintings and other works produced chiefly in the 1950s and 60s by Hartung, Wols, Soulages, Fautrier, Michaux, Fontana, Burri, Appel, Riopelle, Pollock, Tobey, Yoshihara and dozens of other artists whose varied styles of gestural abstraction represent a radical departure from the geometric tendencies derived from Cubist and Constructivist principles.
