A scholarly study of Verhaeren's influential role as a champion of Impressionism and other progressive art movements of the late 19th century, this catalogue presents six essays examining the career, aesthetic views and collecting activities of the noted Belgian poet and critic (1855-1916), a selection of excerpts from his correspondence, and reproductions of some 70 paintings, drawings and sculptures by many of the French and Belgian artists he supported, among them such prominent figures as Degas, Seurat, Ensor, Carriere, Minne, Van Rysselberghe, Redon and Khnopff.
