SMALL WONDER: WORLDS IN A BOX -- DAVID LEVINTHAL. David Corey. National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 1996. American Scene, 4. Published in association with D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, New York. 160 pp. with 185 ills. (153 col.). 24 x 26 cm. LC 95-25368 ISBN 1881616398 In English.
Surveying works by an American photographer whose unusual oeuvre consists of subtly disorienting images of tabletop tableaux composed of plastic toy figures and models, this catalogue features fine reproductions of nearly 150 photographs by Levinthal (b. 1949) that variously depict battlefields, circuses and scenes of domestic life. A prefatory essay traces the postwar history of the manufactured playsets employed in the artist's works and explores their significance as embodiments of American cultural values of the 1950s.
