Prefaced by three essays reviewing the career of Dutch marine painter and collector Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) and tracing the history of the museum that he founded in the late 1880s to house his collection of contemporary Realist art. This substantial catalogue presents reproductions and individual discussions of some 360 paintings and works on paper by more than 100 predominantly Dutch and French artists, including landscapes, portraits, genre scenes and still lifes by such figures as Bosboom, Israels, the Maris brothers, Mauve, Toorop, Alma-Tadema, Corot, Delacroix, Courbet, Daubingny, Millet and Diaz.
