PIERRE GIRIEUD ET L'EXPERIENCE DE LA MODERNITE, 1900-1912 (Pierre Girieud and the Experience of Modernity, 1900-1912). Musee Cantini, Marseille, 1996. Published by Musees de Marseille. 176 pp. with 171 ills. (42 col.). 27 x 21 cm. ISBN 2902308159 In French.
Focusing on the progressive body of early work produced by a lesser-known Provencale artist noted for his involvement in the rise of Fauvism, this catalogue illustrates more than 100 canvases and works on paper that reflect links between Girieud (1876-1948) and such figures as Gauguin, Derain, Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky, the selectin encompassing symbolic treatments of biblical scenes, nude studies, landscapes and still lifes. Two essays discussing Girieud's fusion of modernist and classical elements in his paintings and decorative frescoes are supplemented by a detailed chronology of the artist's formative years in Paris and an anthology of critical texts from the period.
