Surveying the oeuvre of a lesser-known French artist noted for his close personal links with Matisse, Gide, Valery and the Bloomsbury circle, this catalogue presents some 30 oils and nearly 100 pastels and other works on paper produced by Bussy from 1893 to 1950, the selection encompassing many striking decorative studies of exotic animals, vibrantly hued views of Mediterranean landscapes and portraits of prominent literary figures of his time. Includes a biographical essay, a substantial discussion of Bussy's stylistic development and primary themes, and an anthology of critical texts dating from 1897 to 1948.
