Surveying the career of a German painter whose singular oeuvre blends elements of Magic Realism and Surrealism, this catalogue presents an interview with Brockmann (1903-1983), a lengthy discussion of the recurring motifs and psychological and philosophical themes in his works, and fine reproductions of 50 paintings and more than 100 drawings and prints produced by the artist from 1922 to 1966, including enigmatic renderings of mannequin-like figures as wel as still lifes, interiors and landscapes incorporating simplified images of bird carcasses and other symbolic objects.
