Accompanying the first in a series of exhibitions designed to illuminate European perceptions of modern American art, this catalogue presents paintings and other works by such artists as Sloan, Hartley, Marin, Kline, Rauschenberg and Judd selected from the Whitney's collection by prominent Dutch curator Rudi Fuchs along with a small group of postwar European compositions drawn from the holdings of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Three essays include a brief discussion of the differences between American and European views of 20th-century art, a commentary on American modernism by Fuchs, and an examination of the reception of American postwar art in the Netherlands.
