Documenting a little-known body of early works produced by Hugo (1894-1984) while serving in the French army during World War I, this catalogue presents illustrations of 160 Cubist-influenced drawings and watercolors that include portraits, still lifes, landscapes and views of small villages. Brief commentaries on many of the featured pieces and a detailed chronology of Hugo's activities from 1915 to 1919 supplement an essay discussing the artist's wartime experiences.
