Based on the 1988 catalogue of the same title prepared by the Musee Picasso in Paris (Worldwide 21438), this scholarly volume presents an extensive study of the creation and significance of Picasso's celebrated 1907 painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, providing pictorial documentation of the featured canvas and scores of preparatory drawings and oil sketches for the work as well as illustrations of related images by Picasso and other artists. A lengthy examination of the genesis, development, execution and critical reception of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is augmented by an anthology of early commentaries on the work and a chronology of the painting's history prior to its acquisition by the Museum of Modern Art in 1939.
