Documents an exhibition of some 130 mixed-media drawings produced from the 1930s to the 1970s by self-taught African American artist Evans (1892-1987), including many vividly hued compositions in which abstracted plant and animal forms and images of the human face are incorporated into elaborate symmetrical configurations. Four essays discuss Evans's life and career in North Carolina, examine the sources and distinctive features of her visionary drawings, and evaluate her oeuvre in the contexts of Surrealism and folk art traditions.
