ROBERT HELM, 1981-1993. Marti Mayo et al. Sarah Campbell Blaffer Gallery, University of Houston, 1994. Distributed by University of Washington Press, Seattle. 128 pp. with 64 ills. (63 col.). 27 x 27 cm. LC 93-74800 ISBN 0941193098 In English.
Showcasing individualistic, surreal tableaux created from 1981 to 1993 by American artist Helm (b. 1943), this catalogue features excellent reproductions of 63 panel paintings (many incorporating illusionistic wood inlays) in which variously realistic and abstracted images of birds, planks, trees, boxes, mirrors and other natural and man-made forms are arranged within stark, otherworldly landscapes. Augmented by a personal profile of the artist, two critical essays discuss his career in the Pacific Northwest, the spiritual and metaphysical themes explored in his meticulously crafted works, and the relationship of his vision to regionalist traditions.
