A REDISCOVERED REGIONALIST: HERMAN MENZEL. Wendy Greenhouse and Susan S. Weininger. Chicago Historical Society, 1994. 80 pp. with 72 ills. (48 col.). 22 x 28 cm. ISBN 091382020 In English.
Prefaced with a critical overview of Menzel's reclusive career and the evolution of his evocative figurative oeuvre, this catalogue presents good reproductions of 38 oils and ten drawings and watercolors produced by the little-known Chicago artist (1904-1988) primarily from the late 1920s to the 1940s, including somber depictions of poolroom and aquarium interiors, landscapes, and studies of beach scenes and harbor views that suggest Menzel's affinities with Hopper and other American realists of the period.
