LES JOLIES FEMMES D'EDOUARD DE BEAUMONT (The Pretty Women of Edouard de Beaumont). Laura Strumingher Schor. Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Art Gallery, Hunter College, City University of New York, 1994. 60 pp. with 57 ills. 28 x 22 cm. In English.
An informative review of the graphic oeuvre of a little-studied French artist whose satirical yet sympathetic portrayals of "modern" women appeared in the popular Parisian daily Charivari from 1843 to 1866, this catalogue features reproductions of 56 captioned lithographs by Beaumont (1819-1888) depicting attractive, often rebellious women in a wide range of social situations, many of the works embodying ironic commentaries on gender roles and class issues.
