Prefaced with an essay profiling the collecting activities of the prominent Neapolitan d'Avalos family and the broad array of art works from their holdings donated to the state in 1862, this catalogue presents illustrations and individual discussions of some 100 paintings and thirteen tapestries dating primarily from the 16th and 17th centuries, the selection including religious tableaux, depictions of mythological scenes, portraits and still lifes by Luca Giordano, Massimo Stanzione, Giuseppe Recco, Pacecco de Rosa and other artists active in Naples as well as compositions by Ribera, Vouet and several Flemish painters.
