Thoroughly documenting the history of the artistic community centered in the studios of Berlin's Klosterstrasse during the Third Reich, this scholarly catalogue presents reproductions of some 100 chiefly figurative sculptures, drawings, paintings and other works by Kathe Kollwitz, Gerhard Marcks, Werner Gilles, Hermann Blumenthal, Werner Heldt and four other artists who were among the 72 diverse figures associated with the Ateliergemeinschaft over the period. Nine essays discuss the impact of National Socialist political and cultural values on the careers of the Ateliergemeinschaft members and examine the interplay of classical and modernist elements in the oeuvres of the nine featured artists.
