Examining a wide range of 19th-century art works inspired by the illicit affair of 13th-century lovers Francesa da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta as immortalized in Dante's Inferno, this catalogue features reproductions and individual discussions of 54 drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures depicting the couple's amorous encounters, their violent deaths and their punishment in the afterlife, the selection encompassing images by Fuseli, Koch and Moreau and by numerous Italian painters. Includes six essays examining the tale's historical background and the evolution of its iconography as well as illustrations of 60 additional treatments of the theme by artists ranging from Blake to Rodin.
