Examining the Impressionist-inspired oeuvre of a little-known French painter who spent much of his career in Manchester (1905-1928), this catalogue illustrates more than 70 paintings and some 15 works on paper produced by Valette (1876-1942) from the turn of the century through the early 1930s, including portraits and rural landscapes as well as many atmospheric studies of the streets and waterways of the his adopted city. A detailed discussion of Valette's life and work is supplemented by brief profiles of 30 of his students at the Manchester School of Art, among them noted British painter L.S. Lowry.
