Presents an exhaustive study of a series of cartoons produced by Overbeck (1789-1869) from 1867 to 1869 for a major fresco project for the Djakovo cathedral, the last, unfinished commission undertaken by the well-known Nazarene artist. Illustrations and detailed analyses of the 14 completed designs are accompanied by seven essays that include examinations of the history of the commission and issues related to the creation and recent restoration of the drawings as well as discussions of such topics as the significance of cartoons as independent art works and the status of religious painting within European art of the late 1860s.
