Illuminating the personal and political context of an unusual visit by King Frederick IV of Denmark (1671-1730) to the Medici court in Florence in 1709, this catalogue documents with illustrations and individual descriptions nearly 100 pieces drawn from royal Danish collections, including art works acquired by Frederick in Italy as well as a selection of portraits of the monarch and numerous examples of furniture, costume, metalwork, glassware and other decorative objects associated with his reign. Three essays present an overview of the socio-political climate in Denmark during the period, a detailed discussion of Frederick's reception at the Medici court, and a day-by-day chronology of the King's sojourn in Florence.
