Prefaced with a detailed discussion of the crucial role played by Irish art dealer and collector Hugh Lane (1875-1915) in establishing a museum of modern art in early 20th-century Dublin, this catalogue features good reproductions and substantial individual analyses of 73 paintings, 16 sculptures and some 20 watercolors, drawings and prints from the Gallery's collection, including works produced from the late 1800s through the 1990s by 63 Irish artists (among them Nathaniel Hone, Walter Osborne, Roderic O'Conor, Jack B. Yeats and numerous postwar figures) as well as pieces by such international painters and sculptors as Corot, Millet, Whistler, Degas, Rodin, Sargent, Sickert, Klee and Epstein.
