Marking the bicentennial of Bowdoin College and the centennial of its Walker Art Building, this volume comprises seven substantial essays that chronicle the life of the founding patron of the College, Boston merchant, politician and diplomat James Bowdoin III (1752-1811); discuss the collections of art works, books and geological specimens that he and his widow bequeathed to the College; examine the philosophical issues that shaped the early development of American academic art museums; and describe the construction and decoration of the Walker gallery. Accompanying the texts are reproductions of portraits by Gilbert Stuart, canvases by 17th-century Flemish artists, copies of Old Master paintings, and other varied objects from the Bowdoin bequest as well as illustrations of the murals produced for the Walker Art Building by Vedder, Cox, La Farge and Thayer.
