ALICE RAVENEL HUGER SMITH: AN ARTIST, A PLACE AND A TIME. Martha R. Severens. Gibbes Museum of Art, Carolina Art Association, Charleston, 1993. 176 pp. with 60 ills. (44 col.). 29 x 22 cm. LC 93-8756 ISBN 0910326215 In English.
The first thorough study of Smith's life and work, this volume presents 37 watercolors and twelve drawings and prints by the Charleston artist (1876-1958), whose oeuvre consists largely of nature studies and lyrical views of the South Carolina coast that frequently reflect the influence of Japanese prints. Fine reproductions of the featured works accompany a detailed account of Smith's career as an artist, author and preservationist, a critical examination of her stylistic development and a lengthy autobiographical text.
