Surveying the expressive oeuvre of a California artist best known as innovative blues-rock musician Captain Beefheart during the 1960s and 70s, this catalogue presents excellent full-page reproductions of some 60 paintings produced by Van Vliet (b. 1941) from 1967 to 1991, the selection consisting largely of vibrant abstractions incorporating human and animal figures. Four critical texts include evaluations of Van Vliet's careers as a musician and visual artist and an essay exploring the relationship between music and painting in his work.
