YARDBIRD SUITE: HAMMONS 93. Deborah Menaker Rothschild et al. Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, 1993. Published 1994. 72 pp. with 53 ills. (5 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 94-938 ISBN 0913697192 In English.
Surveys a diverse selection of sculptural assemblages and site-specific installations produced over the past two decades by noted African American artist David Hammons (b. 1943), many of whose provocative works incorporate such found objects as spades and liquor bottles to create statements on racism, poverty and other social and political issues. Excerpts from four wide-ranging interviews with Hammons (two reprinted) complement two critical essays that discuss the artist's career and improvisational working methods and examine in detail the recent pieces featured in the show, including Yardbird Suite, an installation composed of boom boxes perched in leafless, concrete-bound trees.
