GEORGES DE FEURE, 1868-1943: THE CRUCIAL YEARS, 1890-1905. Ian Millman. Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, 1993. 19th-Century Masters, 4. Distributed by Uitgeverij Waanders b.v., Zwolle. 104 pp. with 194 ills. (87 col.). 29 x 25 cm. LC 94-167173 ISBN 9066304448 In English.
Examining de Feure's early career and his position within the Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements, this catalogue documents more than 50 paintings, gouaches and drawings by the Franco-Dutch artist along with some 75 examples of his decorative designs for posters, prints, furniture and ceramics, many of the works incorporating elegant female figures and exotic floral motifs. Excellent reproductions of the featured pieces (most accompanied by individual commentaries) are prefaced by a substantial essay that chronicles de Feure's multifaceted activities in turn-of-the-century Paris and his extensive work as a designer for Art Nouveau dealer and patron Siegfried Bing.
