The first substantial study of the career of distinguished French engraver Vieillard (1907-1989), this catalogue documents an exhibition of 73 prints and eleven livres d'artiste produced from the 1930s through the 1980s, including architectural fantasies, surrealist compositions and figural and biomorphic abstractions. Accompanied by a checklist of more than 300 prints by Vieillard, three essays examine the artist's career, the traditional and modernist elements reflected in his monochromatic works, and the central position of book illustration in his oeuvre.
