ENCYCLOPEDIA PERSONA, A-Z. Karen Moss et al. Santa Monica Museum of Art, 1993. Organized in association with and published by Fellows of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. 110 pp. with 195 ills. (52 col.). 26 x 19 cm. LC 93-20828 ISBN 0911291229 In English.
Published in conjunction with an exhibition of some 80 assemblages, installations and books from twelve series of Dada-influenced conceptual works produced from 1979 to 1993 by Kim Abeles (b. 1952), this unusual catalogue thoroughly surveys the socially and politically engaged career and thematic concerns of a Southern California artist whose oeuvre addresses issues ranging from environmental pollution and the AIDS epidemic to the trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Prefaced by a critical essay discussing the intermingling of fact and fiction in Abeles's work, illustrations of the featured pieces (many composed of found materials and objects) are accompanied by detailed explanatory entries by the artist presented in an alphabetical arrangement modeled on an early 1960s edition of the World Book Encyclopedia.
