TURNER'S VIGNETTES. Jan Piggott. Tate Gallery, London, 1993. Distributed in the U.S.A. by University of Washington Press, Seattle. 128 pp. with 238 ills. (10 col.). 27 x 22 cm. LC 95-182013 ISBN 1854371320 In English.
Highlights a once-celebrated aspect of Turner's oeuvre through a presentation of 42 drawings and watercolors by the British artist (1775-1851) that were produced during the 1830s as designs for illustrations of editions of works by Byron, Milton, Scott and other writers. Augmented by small reproductions of nearly 150 vignettes engraved after Turner's watercolors, three scholarly texts trace the evolution of the exhibited images (which include landscapes, marine views and architectural studies) from preliminary sketches to finished engravings, discussing their relationship to the works they illustrate.
