Presents a detailed study of the career of Montreal painter Hebert (1890-1967), an accomplished but lesser-known figure in the development of modernism in Canada whose oeuvre encompasses numerous atmospheric cityscapes, depictions of street scenes, and industrial and harbor views. Reproductions and individual discussions of 71 works dating from 1912 to 1955 are accompanied by a biographical essay and two critical texts examining Hebert's investigation of modernist themes in the context of the conservative realist traditions of Quebec art during the first half of the 20th century.
