MATISSE: THE DANCE. Jack Flam. National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., 1993. 88 pp. with 63 ills. (9 col.). 28 x 21 cm. LC 93-15991 ISBN 0894681974 In English.
This detailed study of the mural project undertaken by Matisse from 1930 to 1933 for the Barnes Foundation in Merion examines the monumental depiction of dancing nudes the artist produced for the main gallery of the Foundation as well as his second version of the three-part painting and a recently discovered full-scale study for the original mural. Illustrated with photographs of the works in progress and reproductions of preparatory drawings and oil sketches, a substantial five-part text chronicles the history of the complex commission, assessing the pivotal position of the mural in Matisse's oeuvre and the significance of the artist's innovative use of paper cutouts in its design.
