LA NEBULEUSE NABIE: LES NABIS ET L'ART GRAPHIQUE (The Obscure Prophet: The Nabis and Graphic Art). Francois Fossier. Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, 1993. Published in association with Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 304 pp. (3 foldout) with 153 ills. (68 col.). 28 x 23 cm. LC 93-233491 ISBN 2711828085 In French.
Complementing the overview of the Nabi movement presented in the catalogue of the 1993 Grand Palais exhibition (Worldwide 24156), this volume examines the significance of printmaking within the divergent oeuvres of the Nabi artists through a presentation of some 150 works selected from the Bibliotheque's extensive holdings, including many figure studies and depictions of domestic interiors and street scenes as well as posters, illustrations and theater-related designs. Seventeen scholarly texts discuss such topics as the influence of Symbolism and Japanese prints on the Nabis, the distinctive woodcuts of Vallotton, and the involvement of the Nabis in book illustration while also highlighting the individual achievements of Denis, Bonnard, Roussel and Vuillard and their role in the revival of color lithography in late 19th-century Paris.
