Surveying the artistic and musical achievements of Hortense de Beauharnais (1783-1837), daughter of the Empress Josephine, mother of Napoleon III and briefly queen of Holland, this catalogue documents an exhibition of 50 drawings, paintings and prints by Hortense (chiefly portraits and nature studies) along with diverse art works, musical instruments and decorative objects related to her life. Twelve concise essays discuss such topics as Hortense's art education, her accomplishments as a composer of musical romances, her activities as a patron of the arts, and the architecture and furnishings of three of her residences.
