Surveying the substantial body of paintings produced by a French artist best known for his major role in the revival of the art of tapestry during the 1930s and 40s, this catalogue documents some 100 oils, gouaches, watercolors and drawings dating from 1913 to 1965 by Jean Lurcat (1892-1966) along with five of his large-scale symbolic tapestries. Two critical essays accompany good reproductions of selected works, which range from Cubist-influenced figure studies and still lifes to surrealistic seascapes.
