A thorough review of the career of American artist Ruellan (b. 1905), this catalogue documents an exhibition of 50 paintings and works on paper dating from 1924 to 1966, including depictions of New York street scenes and studies of the lives of African Americans in the South. Illustrations of the exhibited compositions and related works accompany two essays tracing Ruellan's artistic development from her early training in Europe and her involvement in the Woodstock art colony through her achievements as an American Scene painter in the 1930s and 40s and her later experiments with Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism.
