Highlights some 70 paintings and eight sculptures selected from the 165 works presented by Vernon (1774-1849) to the National Gallery in 1847, a donation intended to promote the formation of a national collection of British art which eventually served as a cornerstone of the Tate Gallery's holdings. Illustrations and individual discussions of the featured landscapes, portraits and depictions of historical, literary and genre scenes by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Callcott, Turner, Etty, Landseer, Stanfield and more than 40 other chiefly 19th-century artists are prefaced by two essays detailing Vernon's collecting activities and analyzing the materials and methods used by British painters of his time.
