Reviews the visionary oeuvre of Swiss stage designer and theorist Appia (1862-1928), a central figure in the development of modern scenography, presenting nearly 70 evocative drawings by the artist that illustrate his innovative use of massive architectural forms and monumental stairways. Six scholarly texts (one reprinted) include discussions of Appia's artistic style and abstract motifs, an examination of his involvement with the progressive theories of Swiss composer Emile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865-1950), and analyses of his designs for three operas staged during the 1910s and 20s.
